If one is still enough, one can see that neither bragging nor envy is a balanced way of thinking. Why would anyone want to be bragging- over the balance tip, envy, lesser then the balance tip? Either way, it's not good virtues to be either one. Both are not good places to be.
Such are the weird behavior of humans and their ego. These qualities will show out, or they will be attracted to, when their inner being is not balanced. Such display of behavior, is a way to detect and to correct. But it can only be done thru understand and mostly (from what I experienced) meditation of the mind.
This is why meditation is so important, because it can see all the blind spots that we normally can't.
